Maine - Wooden Boat

The Blue Hill Bay Light guards the point of the Blue Hill Peninsula.  Traveling south in Blue Hill Bay, rounding the point, and heading up Eggamoggin Reach, the first cove is known as Wooden Boat.

This cove has been known by many names, only recently has it become commonly called Wooden Boat.  An appropriate and descriptive name because the cove is often filled with wooden boats.

Wooden Boat Magazine purchased an old estate on the land surrounding this cove for their offices and operations.  More than a magazine, Wooden Boat has events, shows, tools, forums, TV programs, and a school.  This spot has become the mecca for lovers of wooden boats.

The Wooden Boat School is located in an old shop building on the grounds.

The Last Dance crew arrived at the school during the lunch break.  One of the students conducted an impromptu tour of the shops.  He described the classes as "Summer Camp for Old Guys."

His class was building two Adirondack guide canoes.  He had won the class lottery and was taking one of the canoes home, appropriately since he lives in the Adirondack Mountains.

Some of the courses cover building new boats of wood, others address restoring old wooden boats.

Classes during the visit must have been covering different styles of wooden canoes, as many canoes were under construction.  Need a clamp?
